Ustipke (pronounced "ushteepke") is a Croatian recipe I learned from a friend. It's my favourite thing to make for breakfast! Serve with a mixture of cottage cheese, feta cheese, sliced cucumbers, radishes, green onion and bell pepper. Also good with jam.
Slowly heat oil over medium-low heat while preparing ingredients.
Beat egg in medium bowl. Add yogourt then dry ingredients. Mix well. Dough should stick to spoon and bowl. If dough is dry and not sticking, add more yogourt.
To test temperature of oil, drop a small piece of dough into the oil. If bubbles form around the dough and the dough floats to top within seconds, the oil is ready. If the dough gets dark quickly, the oil is too hot.
Form balls with two spoons and slowly drop into oil, one at a time. Cook enough balls at once to fill the surface of the pot without the balls sticking together. Turn balls half way through cooking if ball isn’t turning on its own. Cook until golden on the outside and cooked on the inside.
Remove cooked balls with two forks and place in bowl lined with paper towels.
