Authentic Salvadoran Beef Pasteles (Fried Hand Pies)

Learn to make authentic Salvadoran Pasteles, delicious deep-fried hand pies filled with a savory mixture of seasoned ground beef, corn, onion, cilantro, and rice. Perfect as a hearty snack or appetizer.

Ingredients

  • Ground beef mixture:
  • 1 lb. cooked ground beef
  • 1/2 tsp. garlic salt
  • 1 tsp. adobo
  • 1 cup frozen corn
  • 1/4 cup onion
  • 1/4 cup cilantro
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • Corn flour mixture:
  • 2 1/2 cups corn flour
  • 3 pinches salt
  • 2 Tbsp. paprika
  • 2 Tbsp. butter
  • 2 cups water

Method

Mix together ground beef mixture and keep warm.

Mix the corn flour ingredients in a bowl and then pinch off small pieces of dough. Form the dough into a ball, press down into a small circle. Scoop out approximately 1 Tbsp. of ground beef mixture into the center of the flour circle. Fold the circle over the ground beef and pinch the edges together. Place in deep fryer and cook until a light brown colour.
